Best of Beauty – Color Fading? Dry Hair? Time to change your at-home hair-care!

Is your hair color fading this summer? This week’s Best of Beauty tip comes from the Mafia Hairdresser. Does your hair lack shine because you’ve been in the pool or been in the sun? Well it’s time to change your at-home hair-care products.

I work at Joseph Michael’s Salon & Spa where we have two of the finest hair-care lines that have excellent products which specifically address color fadage, lack of shine, as well as hair protection from sun, pool and water damage. I’ll share my recommendations and you are more than welcome to comment-add what you use so our readers can make up their own minds which product they would like to use.

If you are product junkie and want all the bells and whistles in your products then you have to look no farther than Chroma Captive sulfate-free shampoo (bain) from Kérastase. The company tells us that it will capture and preserve “color-perfection” for up to 40 days. But I rely on my own eyes and my client’s feedback and I can tell you that this shampoo helps keep shine and color in my client’s hair. All of Kérastase shine and color-protect products are easy to spot in the salon. Just look for the hot-fuchsia packaging.

The sulfate free shampoo is a must but the Chromo Captive shine intensifying conditioner is the big protector. It leaves the hair smooth and easy to comb-through and that’s because it “fills” the raised cuticle of the hair shaft with cationic polymers, (this is a good coating!) ceramide and candelilla wax. This product on your hair also helps to make a smooth surface which, of course, reflects light better than a roughed up surface.

Are you a swimmer? Then you must use Kérastase Aqua Seal. Here are two of the reviews I read online: Perfect Hair Shield

“Aqua-seal is amazing! I swim at least 4 times a week, and my hair was turning into straw. Once I started using Aqua-seal not only did my hair improve, but it was healthier than it had ever been. For those that are in the sun, or in water all the time – Aqua-Seal is your best friend!”

“I love this product! I apply it before swimming in my pool and it makes me feel like I’m at the beach at St. Tropez. The fragrance is almost intoxicating, but not over-powering. It coats my hair without feeling oily.”

This is a new product to me and I have recommended it to my clients and they love it too BUT I now know that you must NOT spray too much on your hair and then put on a swimming cap. The swimming cap will slide off while swimming. This is a great conditioner for frizzy or thick hair too. If you have very fine hair, I would recommend the Bumble & Bumble Color Minded Conditioner instead.

Bumble & Bumble is so affordable and I probably recommend the Color Minded Shampoo and Conditioner more than any other products in the salon. The Color Minded Shampoo is sulfate-free and both fine and thick hair can use it. But what really stands out in this line is the Color Minded Conditioner. The longer you leave it on in the shower, the more it coats, protects and conditions. “It’s a moisture whip so rich, it moonlights as a masque.” Our assistants love this product at the shampoo bowels and it is our go-to after most of our color services. The Conditioner is still light weight so everyone can use it.

I went online to see what other people were saying and I found this lovely endorsement from a gal who also recommended the Color Minded Polish for her ends. I have to admit that I had not used it yet but now I’m going to try it on my clients who have damaged ends. It looks like the perfect solution for those dry ends that need a little more than basic care. To be the best colorist in Chicago means learning new things all the time and I welcome your comments.
