7 Healthy Snacks for Your Memorial Day Road Trip

As you hit the road memorial day weekend, it’s important to be prepared when hunger strikes and the troops become restless. We try to limit stops as much as possible and packing snacks helps tremendously. Over the years it has been trial and error and changes as my kids get older. I‘m not a fan of snacking, but bringing healthy snacks makes me feel somewhat better. Here are six healthy options that my kids love when we travel.

  1. Edamame – Easy to make in less than 20 minutes. After draining and cooling, place in a Ziploc bag and tosh with Kosher salt. Don’t forget the extra baggie for shells.
  2. Low- Fat String Cheese – Check labels and be sure each piece is 100 calories or less. We love Sorrento Sticksters Colby Jack Cheese Sticks at 90 cals.
  3. Roasted Pistachios – one of the lowest calorie, lowest fat, highest fiber nuts. Recently introduced to my girls, the youngest loves. I purchase in the shell so it slows her down and keeps her occupied. Don’t forget an extra Ziploc for your shells.
  4. Fruit – An obvious choice for any age, however we stick with the least messy and easiest to eat while strapped in a car seat. Apples (cut), bananas, grapes and honeydew melons are great choices. Stay away from blueberries, oranges,  watermelon and anything that results in excessive juice or can potentially stain.
  5. Veggies – Baby carrots, cut peppers, snap peas are great options. We pack a small container of hummus.
  6. Crunchmaster Gluten-Free CrackersThese are my top pick for a gluten free cracker and an alternative for chips. 100% whole grain, cholesterol free, low in sodium, low in saturated fat and with 0 grams of trans fat.
  7. Ella’s  Kitchen Excellent for on the go babies who may not be able to manage fruit on their own and picky toddlers who refuse to eat their veggies. Ella’s Kitchen Smoothie Fruits combine fruit and veggies like broccoli, pears + peas to create a fun and healthy travel snack. My kids love Ella’s Kitchen and I was able to sneak in spinach and broccoli without their knowledge.
