Ask the Mafia Hairdresser: What are the Best In-Home Scalp Treatments?

Rarely does anyone ask me directly for in home remedies for their hair in the salon because they think that I would only recommend the products that I use in the salon–not true. If I know a client is asking me for a specific remedy and they want to know of a natural oil or hair color enhancing product that works, I will tell them what I know and what has worked for me or my other clients. Here’s a few of my recommends that I think work very well:

1) If you have an oily scalp, your fine hair might get limp by the end of the day. One way to combat the oily is to “tell the scalp to calm down” and a 1/3 cup of cornstarch in cool water poured over your scalp and hair after shampooing will do that. Leave it in the hair for a few minutes while you shower then rinse it out. (The skin on your face and body will love it too and feel smooth.) Use your conditioning rinse only on the ends of your hair if you have long hair to keep the hair moisturizes but cornstarch will not dry out your hair.  Note: Shampoo your hair with your favorite fine hair shampoo but please watch out for “natural shampoos” for they might be too stimulating!  Another favorite for oily scalp is crushed mint in a cool water rinse. This is the opposite of calming at first but it tends to regulate the oil production during the day. Guys love this tip.

2) If you have itchy or dry scalp you must first and foremost make sure you are not using chemically laundry detergents. I use Method and love it. If your face and scalp are lying every night on a pillow full of perfumes and irritants, a natural remedy for your sensitive or dry scalp won’t do you much good. The actual remedy to use on itchy or dry scalp is a few drops of lavender or avocado oil. Avocado will tend to have a teensy bit of a soothing affect but lavender really takes the itch away.

3) Add a drop of tea tree oil to either of the above for dandruff. I’m not a fan of dandruff shampoos at all. Especially the ones you see on TV. They make the skin slough off fast but leaves the scalp dry which begets more flakes.

Okay: So, Hair Coloring: If you have mousy blonde hair that naturally turns blonde after a vacation in the sun, you can use a couple of lemons mixed with water in your hair and sit in the sun. Think of every hour as a day of lightening. Your hair will be dryer but not damage. You must use a moisturizing mask afterwards.

I’ve heard that red heads can use can of tomato sauce and use the sun and timelines as above buy your hair will smell do you will have to wash thoroughly and condition. I don’t know anyone who uses this formula.

Brunettes will have better luck with brewing about 5 teabags and let the tea mixture cool off and then pour over the hair and leave in on for an hour. Rinse, wash and condition. This will just refresh those lightened ends.

Please feel free to ask me anything else. If I know the answer I will tell you. If you know of a hair or skin care tip that you would like me to pass on, I would love to do that!
